Name That Action Figure! 8.05.11

Action Figure Collecting - Fri, 2011-08-05 02:38

Congrats to RockyRambo for being the first to name last week's mystery figure: Vintage Kenner Skiff Guard Lando! Tomax and TheBat concurred, so they both get an honorable mention. However, no one even took a stab at the previous week's Mister Miracle. Ah well. Let's see if we can't liven this up a bit.

Think you know this week's mystery figure? Take a guess in the comments below!

Back from Hiatus & Changes to Come!

Action Figure Collecting - Thu, 2011-08-04 02:31

Hey kids! Well, I'm back from my adventures (you may have noticed that the blog was running on autopilot for a couple of weeks), and am ready to dive back into writing and blogging for all of my fellow action figure fanatics.

First of all; Sand Diego Comic Con was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. I bought a bunch of toys (mostly vintage Star Wars) and took pics of all of the new releases (which, due to my camping trip immediately after Comic Con, you have probably all now seen from other outlets, but I'm going to post them here anyway). I went from elation at seeing the upcoming Masters of the Universe Classics figures, to heartbreak at hearing about how they're trying to force people to subscribe to get them (and while limiting production numbers, giving scalper scumbags more profit).

In fact, I came back from SDCC a little saddened about the action figure world. With Mattel cancelling a couple of favorite lines (DCUC, Retro Action), and the gang at Shocker Toys being less than cordial (I was planning on buying a Tick for review, but was inspired to just walk away), I have to say that from an action figure collector's standpoint, it was a bit of a downer.

On a positive note, the joy I felt at seeing the Lego Marvel and DC minifigures is immeasurable! And, of course, my shopping was pretty successful (got a Swamp Thing for one good friend and an exclusive Funko Blox Batman for another) and the experience as a whole was a dream come true an d I can't wait to go back next year.

In other news, some behind-the-scenes changes are occurring here at the About.com Action Figures site, which will basically mean more reviews and articles for you all. So check back often and subscribe to the newsletter. Things are about to get epic!

Action Figure Link-o-Rama! Spy vs Spy, MOTU Commercials and Shocker Toys Going to Court!

Action Figure Collecting - Wed, 2011-08-03 02:48

The Custom Spy vs Spy Project is Simply MAD! - The "usual gang of idiots" never cease to surprise us and they're definitely turning heads with their Spy vs Spy Custom Toy Project. I first heard about this in a recent issuer of MAD (yes, I still read MAD) and then spotted this series of pics on the MAD blog. Oh, how I wish these toys were being sold!

Lost Vintage Masters of the Universe Commercial is EPIC! - This classic MOTU commercial popped up on You Tube recently, which appears to be someone's video of a screen playing the commercial, probably at some convention (like SDCC), which is noted by the Star Wars music and crowd noise in the background. The commercial shows what He-man and the gang could have been like if it weren't for those butchers at Filmation. (Sorry, I'm still not over how horrible I always thought the cartoon was.) (via Poe Ghostal)

And Speaking of Masters of the Universe Online Videos - You've got to see this!

10 Undeniably Nerdy Burger King Kids Meal Sets - Frankly, I have always thought that the BK Lounge was always a bit more hip to what collectors want alongside their cheeseburger and fries. (via Topless Robot)

Some Thoughts on the DCUC Debacle - DC Universe Classics are getting the shaft (sort of) and fans are not happy. Matty has given people a choice on how to keep getting their DCUC figures, and fans are still not happy. I smell doom on the horizon.

Speaking of Doomed Toy Lines - The DC Retro Action figures (which I loved, but admittedly, cherry picked the characters I liked) is getting the axe, and a small band of devotees have banded together to keep them alive. You can help too by joining their Facebook page and signing their petition.

Spy Monkey Creations Goes on Hiatus - But only because they have something up their sleeves.

Tons of New Marvel Universe Preview Pics -  Cool Toy Review posted a massive gallery of Hasbro's New MU figures and all I can say is, "YES! SHE-HULK!"

Shocker Toys Served with Court Papers - Not only were they served with papers, they were served with papers at their own comic con panel! Ouch. I've been hearing bad grumblings about this company for a couple of years now (and been personally snubbed by them twice),  so I can't say I'm surprised. We'll have to see how this turns out. (via Bleeding Cool)

Name That Action Figure! 7.29.11

Action Figure Collecting - Thu, 2011-07-28 23:00

Congrats to whoever correctly guess last week's mystery figure as DCUC's Mister Miracle, one of my all-time favorite super heroes and subsequently all-time favorite action figures! Once again, much like last week, I can't name the winner because I'm not actually here, I'm camping in the woods right now. But I'll make sure that all winners get a shout out next week when I'm back.

Think you know this week's mystery figure? Take a guess in the comments below!

Tonner Dolls to Produce Captain America!

Action Figure Collecting - Wed, 2011-07-27 23:00

Yes, yes, I know; These are not technically action figures, but they are close cousins as we have already established in this article. And besides dolls of this nature being closely related, the subject matter alone brings it even closer to what we action figure collectors are all about, which anyone can clearly see after one look at Tonner's latest offering, Captain America!

Cap is having one heck of a year in 2011 with a new movie, a killer toy line from Hasbro (for the most part) and now getting the Tonner treatment.

For those of you not familiar with Tonner dolls, they're sort of what you'd get if you mixed a barbie doll with a Sideshow Toys premium 12" figure, sprinkled on some geek culture and then glazed the entire thing with a fine coating of sugar (metaphorically speaking).

This leads me to wonder; Who exactly is the intended audience of these toys? They're expensive, stunningly beautiful, yet are often in the form of classic comic book heroes. Any readers here buying these figures, and if so, what's your attraction to them? Inquiring collectors want to know!

Batman Arkham City Gets the Once Over from Poe Ghostal

Action Figure Collecting - Tue, 2011-07-26 23:00

I don't normally just post a link to another action figure review (except in our usual weekly Action Figure Link-o-Rama), but this particular figure is of major interest to me, being one of the more exciting newer releases of a Batman action figure and definitely one that I'd love to add to my Batman collection.

But, alas, I don't own one of these, and have my own pile of figures to eventually get around to reviewing, so Poe Ghostal's review is just what the collector ordered.

Sadly, the Batman figure only scored a 3 out of 5 (Poe makes special note to the fact that this figure was not sculpted by the mighty Four Horsemen), but that's not enough to sway me away from buying one eventually.

The Two Face figure, which is also reviewed in the same post, fared far worse, earning only a 1.5 out of 5. Yikes! Oh well, looks like I'll be skipping that one.

Check out Poe Ghostal's Points of Articulation for the full review!

Name That Action Figure! 7.22.11

Action Figure Collecting - Thu, 2011-07-21 23:00

The answer to last week's mystery figure is none other than the ever popular Space Ghost! My hat's off to whoever got it right. I'd call out your name but I've written this post in the past because I knew that I'd be at San Diego Comic Con when it published! Somehow, I imagine many of you don't feel sorry for me right now. But congrats anyway to the winner! (If there is one, that is.)

I'm Off to San Diego Comic Con!

Action Figure Collecting - Tue, 2011-07-19 23:00

Well, it's taken 20 years since I first heard about San Diego Comic Con, that almost mythical mecca of everything geeky and nerdy, but this year I will finally be going to SDCC!

In fact, by the time you are all reading this, our booth will be set up and we'll be preparing for Preview Night. You see, I'm going not just as a fanboy, but as an actual exhibitor. So, to not look as though I'm trying to promote my day job nor the products we produce, I won't shamelessly plug our booth number or anything here, but if you happen to see a guy with a shaved head, tattoos and wearing all white working a booth at the far wall in section A (near the dining hall), that's probably me, your faithful About.com Action Figures Guide, and I'd love to say hi to you!

You can bet your vintage vinyl cape Jawa that I'll be trying to squeeze in a little shopping. I'm mostly planning on hunting down some vintage figures that I need (having recently decided to try and complete my vintage Kenner Star Wars collection), but many of the SDCC exclusives look awfully tempting as well, specifically this Indiana Jones set and of course, Mattel's Swamp Thing!

What will I come back with? Who knows. Probably mostly just bags under my eyes and a brain packed full of memories. But you can count on this action figure collecting blogger will spend the week making a 20 year long dream come true!
